If you are VAT-registered or self-employed in the UK, you need the VAT amount and supplier VAT number from each receipt, not just the total. Drop your receipts and invoices and get a spreadsheet with the net amount, VAT, gross total, the VAT rate shown on the receipt and the VAT registration number when it's printed. Rows are grouped into common self-employment expense categories. Amounts are read from the receipt and never calculated, so what you see matches the paper.

UK VAT receipts — questions
Does it calculate VAT at 20%?
No. It reads the VAT amount and rate printed on the receipt. If a receipt shows no VAT, the VAT column stays empty or zero.
Is the supplier VAT number extracted?
Yes, when it's printed on the receipt. It goes in its own column.
Does it fill in my VAT return?
No. It gives you a clean spreadsheet of receipts and totals. Your VAT return is still filed through your usual software or accountant.
